Description:

As the Interaction Designer for VIACK Corporation, you will work closely with other departments to plan, direct and implement the user interface design, aesthetic direction, and usability efforts for VIACK's online collaboration offerings. With the goal of creating intuitively usable products, you will drive user interface designs from conceptualization through prototyping to implementation, developing high level, and/or detailed storyboards, mockups and prototypes to effectively communicate designs. You will assist program management in authoring functional user requirements documents for the interfaces. You will champion user-centered design and conceive, set, and implement user interface guidelines and standards. Implementing usability processes and methodologies, you will evaluate designs, conduct usability tests, provide feedback to project teams and propose solutions. Additionally, you will work closely with other departments to develop and facilitate the lifecycle of major company initiatives and product goals from concept to launch.

The ideal candidate and top performer will achieve and exceed the following performance goals:

Within 30 days...

  • Assess VIA3 to determine areas with the highest usability challenges.
  • Identify "low hanging fruit" opportunities for immediate improvement to the UI and Usability of VIA3, propose and implement solutions.
  • Fine tune the VIA3 user persona description and get organizational buy-in.
  • Work with Developers to help complete VIA3 v4.0 UI and functional specs.
  • Demonstrate solid understanding of the VIA3 product and key user and organizational benefits.
  • Review current/past usability test plans and develop a usability plan for VIA3 4.0.

Within 90 days...

  • Perform usability assessment of the VIACK.com website and provide recommendations for improvements.
  • Establish yourself as the usability go-to person who is a trusted source for usability improvements and design decisions based on real user data and customer feedback.
  • Attend a government or military trade show to become more acquainted with VIACK's target markets.

Qualifications:

  • You must possess successful professional experience in UI design and usability testing for software products.
  • Strong logical design skills are required, including a solid understanding of the software product development life-cycle.
  • You must possess an expertise in UI Design, including a thorough understanding of Windows user interface design standards and superior understanding and sensitivity to alignment, hierarchy, color theory, metaphors, page layout, page composition, and typography.
  • Proficiency with design and prototyping tools such as Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Illustrator, Visio and Dreamweaver is required.
  • You must possess a strong understanding of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the HCI / Human Factors field.
  • You'll need thorough knowledge and experience applying a wide variety of methods for gathering usability data.
  • Using usability testing processes, you must be able to justify usability findings and work with teams to incorporate the findings into the product.
  • The ideal candidate will also possess a degree directly related to user-centered design and/or usability, such as Interaction Design, Human Factors Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, etc. In this role you will work across multiple departments as a significant contributor to major company initiatives.
  • You must be self-motivated, organized, and have the desire to be a strong team player with an emphasis on meeting team goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must.
