Usability Engineer

Are you passionate about understanding users and how they work? Are you up to the challenge of creating a great user experience for customers responsible for 50% of Microsoft’s revenue? Do you enjoy working with a diverse set of customers, analysts, and engineers who are focused on doing the user experience right? If so, Licensing and Programs Operations is looking for a highly experienced and creative user experience specialist to play a strategic role in helping us define, design, and develop innovative user-centered user interfaces supporting content presentation, information retrieval, and OLTP transaction capture for Microsoft’s Volume Licensing customers and partners. This is both a thought leadership and individual contributor role within the team; we are looking for a senior human factors specialist with a commitment to discovering, interpreting and communicating design insight and best practice expertise to all phases of our design work This highly collaborative role involves working within interdisciplinary teams to create high-quality online content delivery, ad-hoc information retrieval, and OLTP transaction processing interfaces that are informed and inspired by people's behavior and experience - physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and cultural. You will be involved in the entire process from concept to final execution - providing thought leadership, gathering insight, exploring and defining design opportunities, helping define the overall creative and UI behavior strategy, creating tangible design expressions, and developing the specifications that will communicate the essence of these ideas across multiple projects. This role requires a multi-disciplinary skill set including the ability to understand and synthesize broad business goals, optimal workflows, and then create engaging personalized experiences for our customers. A qualified candidate should be able to present a body of work that demonstrates a passion for experience design, a sense of how a superior design can simplify complex communication and interaction problems, and a sense of balance for aesthetics and usability.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required. We're open to applications from people of many educational backgrounds.
  • Advanced degree in human-factors design, usability or user experience design, interface, information, interaction design, design planning, communications, marketing, humanities, social sciences (Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, Linguistics), or other human-centered design area preferred.
  • Significant relevant work experience in any of the above areas may substitute for advanced degree.

Experience Guidelines:

  • Minimum 5-7 years of related work experience required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of how substantial business value can be delivered via innovative design solutions
