Interaction Designer
Scholastic Inc., New York, NY
Position Type: Contract

Scholastic Inc. is looking to refresh its pool Interaction Designer freelancers. The duration and availability of projects is variable, although typically projects require the equivalent of full-time work for several months.

Scope of Responsibilities:

Scholastic defines an Interaction Designer as the advocate for the end user throughout the process of defining and implementing the site. The IAD works with Project and Channel Leads to define the User Experience and Functional Requirements. Once these areas are defined the IAD works closely with the producer and Art Director to ensure that the business requirements, functional requirements, and the overall goals of the user experience are translated in to the page level design.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that product features and functionality meet user needs and are appropriate for target audience
  • Design and evaluate visual human interfaces utilizing user-centered design principles
  • Work closely with design team to ensure UI implementation is properly visualized and executed
  • Validate designs through end user testing and usability evaluations
  • Create documentation to communicate both the spirit and details of the UI to internal teams and the project client.
  • Define site architecture through site maps and navigation flow charts

Required Competencies, Skills & Experience:

  • 5+ years professional experience as interactive developer, demonstrating successful interactive and online products
  • Experience in designing, prototyping, and development of web interfaces and user interfaces in a software and/or Internet development environment
  • Possess deep understanding of interactive design philosophies and methodologies, interface design, and usability testing
  • Excellent communications skills – Candidate needs to be able to communicate the vision of the user experience and functionality to the team and Business Units.
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Excellent visual design sense
  • Demonstrate initiative, excellent judgment, independence, and problem solving ability
  • Proficient in current web development technologies and software applications
  • Possess deep knowledge of the online industry
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies a plus
  • Graphic design background a plus.
  • Agency experience a plus
