![]() LIBRARY
From the Librarian Hello, I am your librarian. More accurately, I hold the title of the "Librarian" for ITG. That means I maintain a web site of resources about human factors and the Web: a collection of links to guidelines for usable designs, articles about techniques for improving the usability of sites, a calendar of events, and so on. The site is Usable Web, http://usableweb.com/. I started Usable Web before ITG was formed, mainly as a way to publish all of the links I had compiled for myself. The ITG founders decided it was better to adopt my site as the official ITG library, rather than spend time creating a competitor. It was a win-win situation, allowing other ITG volunteers to concentrate on other efforts, like putting togther Internetworking. On occassion, I will use this newsletter to report on general trends that I discover while I am surfing, indexing, describing and collating all of the web-human-factors resources I can get my hands on. One trend is clear right now: it is hard to keep up with all of the new material! Webmaster-focused sites are popping up with user interface design sections, more columns are being written about how people are building better sites through human factors methods, more events are including human-computer interaction and the Web as topics, and press coverage of the issues are increasingly bringing the field into the mindsets of those working on the Web. Because of this trend, I had to stop adding content in July while I improved the infrastructure of Usable Web. I had to make it less work to add new items or else I would not have been able to keep up. I have things running pretty smooth now and am adding new resources every few days. Check out the ITG library and help me keep it top-notch by sending me feedback (to instone@usableweb.com) and contributing your resources.
